Making Sure You Have Safe Gym Floors

One aspect to consider when it comes to gym floors is the safety of the players and spectators. One should take good care of the gym floor to ensure that it is in top shape at all times. When floors face excessive and early wear and tear due to improper maintenance, they will tend to be more slippery and thus, become hazardous to those who thread on them.

The surface friction, or the ability of the gym floor to control the sliding of athletes, is important consideration for this matter. Gym floors must allow athletes to control their sliding. They must not be too slippery that will cause athletes premature and uncontrollable sliding, but not too restrictive that will prevent athletes to comfortably make rotating and pivoting motions.

One consideration to ensure you are utilising safe flooring is its ability to absorb the shock created when an athlete hits the floor. Typically, when an athlete runs on a hard surface, the floor absorbs part of the force and the other part returns back to the athlete. This returning force may affect the body of the athlete especially to his joints. A safe gym floor system should be able to absorb certain amounts of this returning force. Gym floors are generally rated based on the percentage of shock absorption they can provide; thus, when they are rated 40 percent, this means they can absorb 40 percent of the force and return the 60 percent back to the athlete. The commonly acceptable value for indoor gym floors is 50 percent.

These are just among the many considerations to take when it comes to gym floors. For more information about safety flooring other than those applicable to gym floors, check out the website of the Ellis Group.
